Danube Wave of Peace
(Donau-Friedenswelle)
“Let justice roll down like waters…” (Amos 5:24)
An international project at the end of the Decade to Overcome Violence
“Let justice roll down like waters“: under this motto, taken from the Old Testament’s Book of Amos, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bavaria and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Württemberg, together with the Lutheran Churches of Austria, Hungary, Rumania, and Slovakia have initiated the project “Danube Wave of Peace” (“Donau-Friedenswelle” in German). At the end of the Decade to Overcome Violence, this is a chance to take stock and provide new inspiration for continued efforts. The Danube River—the Donau in German—serves as a symbol of connection and partnership between the churches. Begun in September of 2010 and ending in May of 2011, an internationally planned church service has been flowing like a wave along the Danube; it has been celebrated for a month at a time by the congregations in each of the participating countries.
On July 2, 2010, the bishops of the six Churches will host a concluding service in Neu-Ulm and Ulm. Its goal is to find mutually responsibly ways to shape the Danube region, in the future as well. Against the background of social and economic changes within an increasingly integrated Europe, the Churches seek to provide mutual support in facing regional challenges and advocate and work for a peaceful and just coexistence. Central concerns in the pursuit of this goal include intercultural understanding and improving the living conditions of people with immigrant backgrounds. At the celebratory service in the Ulm minster, Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (Geneva) will give a sermon on the central theme of the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation: “Glory to God and Peace on Earth.”
